Mark Newman at Ottumwa.com is keeping us up to date about the expectations of Scouters in the Mid-Iowa Council and the closing of Camp Wapello which is being vigorously opposed.
The Boy Scout leadership meeting was supposed to bring ideas on improving scouting. And though suggestions came up — from how to celebrate the upcoming centennial of the organization to ways to improve the Web site — that may not have been why two dozen people turned out.
The audience welcomed Mid-Iowa Council’s new director, Scout Executive Bob Hopper, who started January 5.
…
“Before we go much further, I’d like to talk about the elephant in the room — and that’s Camp Wapello,” he said.
…
Though Hopper said he didn’t know what the long-term future of the Mid-Iowa Council of Scouts and Camp Wapello would be, in the short term he was pretty certain.
“Will there be a summer camp there in 2009?” Hopper asked before saying, “It’s virtually assured, no.”
…
“For me, it is our mission to create opportunities for boys to go to a long-term camp … and how that’s accomplished doesn’t matter to me. If it means you create your own camp, go for it. My job is to make our camp, Camp Mitigwa, so attractive kids want to go there.”
I hate seeing camps close, especially ones that hold memories for decades full of Scouts. I hope the mid-Iowa council is trying everything they can to utilize the citizen support that has come out for Camp Wapello.

06-11-09 Update on Camp Wapello. Camp Wapello so far this year has been the site for the Golden Eagle District spring camporee, host to 107 from the 6th grade class of the Davis County Commity Schools. Yet to come this July several troops will be hosting their own merit badge camp. Camp Wapello is not dead but we still need your help to keep it breathing.
