Ridding Ourselves of Bad Leaders

Posted by admin under: camps; policies; safety .

The Seattle Times brings us the story from Moscow, Idaho of another case where a leader is being charged with crimes against boys placed in his care.

An Idaho grand jury has indicted 38-year-old Timothy Andrew Kellis on nine counts of lewd conduct, one count of attempted lewd conduct, and two counts of sexual abuse of a child.

Kellis has pleaded not guilty to charges that he abused boys last summer while working as a counselor at the Camp Grizzly Boy Scout camp in Harvard, Idaho. Kellis, a former high school band director from Tumwater, Wash., is now being held at the Latah County Jail in Moscow on a $200,000 bond.

He faces the possibility of life in prison.

Obviously we’ll let the court proceedings play out, but if he is guilty as charged and guilty of another charge in another state I’ll be happy to see the maximum penalty enacted. It’s a sad fact that those who wish to prey on children are drawn to youth groups like the Scouts. That’s why it is incumbent on everyone to be sure that the youth protection guidelines are strictly enforced. Never one child and one adult together. Never. Scoutmaster conferences should be held in the same location as other troop activities or a parent should be present. Let’s make sure that Scouting is an example of the most strenuous efforts to keep our children safe from predators.

Once again (like in the post “With Leaders Like These Who Needs Enemies?”) the accused worked at a school…
