GSUSA: Timely Rededication

Posted by admin under: ceremony .

Last night was our Girl Scout troop’s rededication ceremony. It was so close I could almost hear it. Unfortunately, I was in the back room doing my Cub Scout den meeting so I had to miss it. I think it’s the first Girl Scout ceremony I’ve missed in the 7 years we’ve been a troop. Our theme this year was “time”.

I know a lot of Girl Scout troops don’t bother with rededication. For those of you who don’t and are wondering what rededication is, it’s what it sounds like. You have a ceremony so that you can rededicate yourselves to Girl Scouts after having the summer off. It’s the official starting gun for the year. It’s also an opportunity to recognize your girls for anything they’ve earned since your last ceremony. We give out patches for the things we’ve done, badges for what the girls have earned, and other doo-dads based on what has happened since the last ceremony.

For example, participants in our movie project received faux Oscars for their productions.

The girls brought in pictures of themselves from years gone by and they were posted around the room as decorations for the event. They sang a couple songs, read a poem, and vowed to rededicate themselves to Girl Scouts for the year.

I asked my wife if, since I wasn’t there, that meant I wasn’t rededicated and wouldn’t be needed as a leader. Nope. I just get to have my own private rededication event.
