American Legion’s Eagle Scout of the Year

Thanks to Lone Star Scouter’s Buffalo Eagle I now know that the American Legion announce their Eagle Scout of the Year about this time each year. In an article he linked to in the Minneapolis-St. Paul StarTribunethe recipient was revealed to be Paul Banwart who is now attending the University of Minnesota. Mr. Banwart has done a number of outstanding things, but I particularly liked his Eagle project.
He was only 13, but Boy Scout Paul Banwart listened intently to the talk at a Jackson Town hall meeting about the mosquito problem in Jackson Park, where the scouts hold their own meetings. The skeeters weren’t only pests. There was a public health concern as well: West Nile disease and meningitis.
“How can I help?” Banwart, now 18, recalled thinking at the time. “How can I solve this problem?”
That gave young Paul the idea in 2003 for his major Eagle Scout project — building bat houses for about 550 mosquito-gobbling bats.
What can I say? Bat houses. That’s cool. The American Legion will be having their annual convention later this month in Arizona and the implication is that Mr. Banwart will receive his honor there.
I’m glad Buffalo Eagle said something because this announcement was apparently made back in May and I totally missed it.

Shakopee Teen Named The American Legion Eagle Scout of The Year
INDIANAPOLIS, IN, May 08, 2008 -
A Shakopee, Minn., student has been named The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year for 2008.
Paul J. P. Banwart, 18, a senior at Shakopee High School and a member of Venturing Crew 88, earned the award and a college scholarship worth $10,000. The award was announced during The American Legion’s board of directors meeting here.
A belated congratulations to Mr. Banwart. I’m sure he’ll find a good use for the scholarship.
