Buzz Aldrin Supports Boy Scout Gala

Barbara Ady relates a fundraiser for Boy Scouts at which Buzz Aldrin was present.

The VIP reception at the Boy Scout Gala was very well attended, as everyone wanted to get a picture taken with legendary Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, a service thoughtfully provided by the evening’s organizers. There were also hors d’oeuvres passed and an open bar available, but everyone was focused on meeting the Apollo XI astronaut who walked on the moon in 1969.

After the reception on Dec. 1, the crowd swelled with swells and a throng of Boy Scouts, ranging from Cubs to Eagles. All were well groomed, serious and very mannerly, eager to help people to their assigned tables by offering their arms to the ladies and making them feel ever so elegant.

Because of the economy and the fact that many parents have to re-prioritize their spending, more money is needed to assist the boys and to continue rebuilding their Camp Helendale, damaged in the 2007 fires.

It was said that “For every $100 another Scout is served” and the need to conserve funds was reflected in the cutting of all unnecessary frills and expenses. Thus, when Kelly Garrett of GET Entertainment (a former Eagle Scout) stepped up and offered to provide audio, lighting and videos at his expense, district and event chairman Mike Lindley jumped at the offer.

What a thrill it is to meet an astronaut. I met the last pilot of Skylab, William Pogue, when I toured Kennedy Space Center during a family vacation and even got a picture with him. I know I would have been standing in line to get a snapshot of man who had actually walked on the moon. I was born before man went to the moon so maybe that’s why I’m so taken with the subject, but I just think it’s so neat they got Buzz Aldrin at their event!

As a side-note to this post, I had to correct the Wikipedia entry on Buzz Aldrin when I was looking up some info. They had him listed as an Eagle Scout, but the BSA lists him as a Tenderfoot. See how powerful I am? Well, I guess anybody can update a Wikipedia page, but, you know, I actually did it. Ha!

And I attended Helendale, too, with my Webelos den a while back. I hope they are able to fix it up. It kind of needed it anyways even back then.
