Girl Scout Joins Mom in Breast Cancer Awareness

The founder of Girl Scouts died from it. A current Girl Scout is trying to help fight it. Melissa and her mom are part of a new campaign that wants to promote awareness of breast cancer and what is being done to find a cure.

Gabriele said she and her daughter were selected after national Komen foundation members asked their regional affiliates for candidates. They were flown out to Dallas for a professional photo shoot, she said.

The photo of Gabriele and Melissa, a fifth-grader at Quarry Hill Elementary in Lower Makefield, is appearing in magazines like Newsweek and Good Housekeeping; airports, including Miami and John F. Kennedy; and malls in Boston, Philadelphia and Seattle, officials said.

The goal of the marketing, besides introducing a new pink ribbon, is to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research to find a cure, foundation representatives said.

“I’m really glad that my mom’s still alive, but I’m also afraid to get breast cancer,” said Melissa, who’s also a junior member of Troop 2105 in the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania. “I think it’s important for people to know about cancer because they can help people who have it by donating money, and hopefully finding a cure.”
