Girl Scouts Go Indiana Jones in Texas

BusinessWire published a press release today from TRC Companies, Inc. that stated that the company had won a bid to recover archaeological data from a 331 acre ranch known as the Landis Property used by the Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains Inc. The press release made it sound like the Scouts were going to get this property from the federal Bureau of Land Management, but a couple calls explained that the BLM had the rights to “egress of archaeological data” which is what TRC has won according to Angela Cincotta, director of marketing.

In fact, one of the operating units of the Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains, Girl Scouts-Five Star Council, received ownership of this property back in 2006 in a big ceremony. The exciting thing about this recent development, according to a professional in the council office, is that girls will have the opportunity to observe these archaeological recovery operations as part of their camping experience. How cool is that? I went with my Cub Scouts some years ago to an archaeological site near Yermo, California, and it was fascinating to see the layers of history being uncovered. Here’s what another professional for the Girl Scouts said about this development.

“The Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains are thrilled to be a part of this exciting project,” said Becky Burton, CEO of Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains.”The Girl Scout program gives girls opportunities to develop their leadership potential. The program encourages girls to Discover, Connect and Take Action. This project is an excellent opportunity for girls to discover the past, connect with it and learn about what they can do to make it a part of their lives. We are looking forward to working together.”

Sounds like the Girl Scouts in Texas will have a unique opportunity. Our old Scoutmaster is an archaeologist. If we were in that region you know he’d have us down there in two shakes of a lamb’s tail. Well, we got by on our Native American cave art so I’m satisfied.
