Girl Scouts Training and Information by San Gorgonio Council

Posted by admin under: Community Partners; Training .

The registration for classes is full, but if you know someone in the general Los Angeles/Inland Empire area who is attending the inaugural “We Believe in Girls!” summit on August 16th you can get a clear idea of what those new Journeys programs for Girl Scouts are going to be about.

The San Gorgonio Council has their announcement discussing how the event will happen.

This year’s inaugural We Believe in Girls! Summit will be broken up into two parts: Navigating New Journeys for Girls, a training session for 800+ adult Girl Scout volunteers to be introduced to new National roll-out materials with presentations by national (GSUSA) and local (GSSGC) Council leaders and Speaking Up! Bold Voices for Girls, an afternoon of keynote speakers open to 200+ additional adults from local communities. The conference is being hosted at the Ontario Convention Center and is already creating great buzz throughout Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

We Believe in Girls! Summit 2008
August 16, 2008
9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. for Girl Scout Volunteers
2-5:30 p.m. for General Public
Ontario Convention Center

I called the San Gorgonio Council and was told that there may still be availability for the afternoon speakers. The event has some really big keynote speakers talking about keeping girls safe online (my daughter is lately enamored with Myspace so this is of interest to me although I’ve already done a number of things in that regard), the image of girls in the media, and connecting children with our natural environment, the afternoon speakers seem well prepared to talk about current issues and how they relate to our daughters.

The registration price listed on the council’s website for the afternoon is $45, but you’ll need to contact them to find out if that’s the current price and if there are any spots available: Linda Tailleart at (800) 400-GIRL (4475) extension 229 or LTailleart@gssgc.org.

One of the keynote speakers is Carol Platt Liebau who I’ve heard on the radio and I’ve been impressed with. Here she’ll be talking about how “it’s time for a more wholesome teen culture”. Hey, that’s what I’ve been saying about Girl Scouts! Okay!

I couldn’t find other instances of other councils doing something this big. The Journeys training for everyone else will probably be on the order of Studio 2B training or your level specific training made available by the local council. I’m certainly willing to hear about other big events like this. It sounds great.

P.S.: And thanks to REI for sponsoring this event. Makes me proud to be a co-op member.
