Nursing Event Draws Scouts

Posted by admin under: Community Partners .

Sally Voth writing for West Virginia’s nvdaily.com tells us about a hands-on event that sounds like it was a lot of fun for all kinds of Scouts. Some of it is nice, but some of it sounded a little, well, gruesome.

Suturing pig legs, starting IVs, studying X-rays, cradling pseudo-babies, getting inside a medical helicopter, inserting a breathing tube — it was all in a day’s work for hundreds of youngsters who participated in the Come Explore Nursing and Health event Saturday at Winchester Medical Center.

The vast array of specialties involved in nursing was on display — operating room, gastrointestinal, forensics, radiology, bariatrics, trauma, neurology, oncology, cardiac care, parish nursing, social work, wound care and home health, to name a few.

Learning how to stitch up a pig’s leg was a big hit with many of the children. Physician assistants guided the precision work.

“We have cardiac nurses who are dissecting sheep hearts,” Zerull said.

Learning to intubate a patient was fun, for Helen Morrison, 12, but the NICU ambulance topped her list “because I like the little babies.”

Ew! Stitching up pig legs? Sounds great! When are they coming out here?

Update: ScoutSigns notes that Winchester is actually in Virginia, rather than West Virginia. Thanks for keeping us honest!

Minor correction, Winchester is in Virginia (a good stone’s throw from WV though).

Shows how you can never have too much communication. I never even heard about it, and it is half an hour from my home.

Thanks,
Scoutsigns
