Paddling Girl Scouts

The Girl Scouts in the Concho Valley in Central Texas are so great they’ve invited hundreds to participate in their 18th annual Race on the River, a canoeing event. They didn’t plan for Hurricane Ike to accept the invitation, however, so the event may not be able to go forward as scheduled. However, it sounds great with 240 anticipated participants including the Mayor. The girls will compete against each other which I love. There aren’t enough opportunities for girls to do traditional outdoors activities without having to deal with boys showing off around them. Whether the weather allows the event to go forward or not, this is a tradition that Texas can be proud of.
The organization’s 18th annual Race on the River is scheduled for Saturday, weather permitting.
“If it drizzles, we’ll be able to go on,” said Cheryl Lowe, Girl Scouts public relations specialist. “But if there’s lightning, obviously we won’t.”
James Pidgeon, community development executive for the organization, said a decision about whether the race will go on could be made as soon as noon Friday. If it looks like weather may be an issue, he said, people planning to attend should listen to KIXY FM for updates.
Jayna Boyle at gosanangelo.com sounds like she’s got your info, too, if you need it.
The skills involved, such as setting a goal and working with a partner, can apply to other situations in life, she said.
“Every activity we do has a purpose behind it other than fun,” Lowe said.
Any funds generated from sponsors participating in the races will benefit the Girl Scout El Camino Program Center to help keep programs affordable and accessible to more girls, Lowe said.
This event is different from many other Girl Scout events because it gives Girl Scouts around the state a chance to interact with each other, Lowe said.
Yeah! That’s me encouraging Girl Scouts to learn many life lessons and get a healthy dose of exercise and fun to boot.
