Queen For a Day, Girl Scout For a Lifetime

Posted by admin under: Community Partners .

Everybody knows Girl Scout Courtney Chou Lee has been announced as the Rose Queen for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses broadcast all over the world every New Year’s Day. Did you know that Gold Award Girl Scouts get to carry the banners announcing the floats, too? It’s true. Gold Award Girl Scouts from California’s Mt. Wilson Vista Council can apply to be a banner carrier. And, oh yeah, uniform is required no matter how “not in touch with today’s girls” it may seem.

Sure, local Eagle Scouts can do it too, but they can’t be chosen Rose Queen. It looks like they are given an invitation if they are an Eagle. By who? I don’t know, but my son’s Jamboree troop SPL was chosen. Although we missed seeing him on TV we saw the pictures at his house (he invited my son to participate in cotillion classes with him [hey, the girls have to have somebody to dance with]).

I’ve asked the council what will happen after we merge in December. Will all Girl Scouts in Greater Los Angeles become eligible to be banner carriers? That’s a lot of girls. Or will it be limited to a certain area around Pasadena. That seems more likely. We’ll see.

The Pasadena Tournament of Roses named Courtney Chou Lee as the 91st Rose Queen today. This announcement concludes a month-long process that began with more than 1,100 Pasadena-area young women who participated in the Tournament of Roses Royal Court tryouts. Queen Courtney was selected from the recently appointed seven-member Royal Court. The Rose Queen and Royal Court will reign over the 2009 New Year’s Day festivities, culminating with the 120th Rose Parade®, themed Hats Off to Entertainment, and the 95th Rose Bowl Game®.

The Rose Queen and Royal Court were each presented with a pearl necklace and pearl earrings from Mikimoto (America) Co., Ltd. earlier this morning.

Courtney also dedicates her time as a Girl Scout and founded the youth philanthropy group, Teens Promoting Stroke Awareness.

As an official ambassador of the Tournament of Roses, Queen Courtney will participate in approximately 150 community and media functions
