Troop New Jersey Girls

The Asbury Park Press in New Jersey reports on an honorary Girl Scout troop formed by members of the state’s legislature.
The newest of New Jersey’s almost 2,000 Girl Scout troops features members with incredible hopes, dreams and ambitious. They’re only different in one way — they hold elected office.
Thirty-four of the state’s women lawmakers joined Troop New Jersey, the first honorary Girl Scout troop in the country consisting of women serving in a state legislature, October 27 at the Trenton Marriott at Lafayette Yard.
The collaboration between Girl Scouts and women in elected office is a natural partnership, said Susan H. McClure, chief executive officer, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore. “Girl Scouts discover the joy of helping others and serving their community at a young age,” McClure said. “Our elected women in the statehouse share that same commitment.”
But why?
“This is a partnership with enormous possibilities for girls, expanding effective programs and bringing Girl Scouts to our underserved communities,,” said Wronski. “We will work together, both legislators and our four local councils throughout New Jersey to expand our mentoring programs and give every young woman the opportunity to reach her highest potential.”
Cool! The story says this is modeled after a federal honorary troop: Troop Capitol Hill.
Collaborations and partnerships with leaders in the federal government offer the Girl Scouts enormous opportunities to create public policies benefiting girls, expand effective programs, and bring Girl Scouting to underserved communities. To further these joint efforts, the Public Policy and Advocacy office established the Honorary Congressional Girl Scout Troop.
…
Troop Capitol Hill has assisted Girl Scouts of the USA in an impressive array of activities, including sponsoring special events to introduce more members of Congress to the benefits of Girl Scouting, developing policy ideas and holding congressional briefings to address key issues facing girls and young women, and identifying funding opportunities to support these issues.
Nice! An honorary troop. What an innovative idea. At least I’ve never heard of it before. What a great PR coup for the Girl Scouts of the USA.
