Boy Scouts Don’t Vote
Posted by admin under: community service .
They’re under 18 years old, after all, so obviously they don’t vote. That doesn’t mean they don’t participate, however. The Concord Monitor has a story about the expected high turnout for this year’s elections and how one troop is prepared to help out.
[Hadaway] said Bow officials were taking plenty of measures to make sure voting goes smoothly today.
They’re putting up extra signs to direct voters around the voting site in the town community center. Extra police officers will be on duty to direct traffic, and the town’s Boy Scout troop will help in the parking lot.
We get a lot of that directing parking lot traffic kind of thing. This story also gave me an excuse to brag on my boy. Not only did he win his second term as the Senior Patrol Leader, he made his papa very proud by being trained and volunteering to work at our local polling place. Well, volunteer might be stretching the term since he told me he’ll be getting paid for the work. He had to take the day off school and with his AP classes I’m sure he’s not looking forward to catching up with what he’s missing today. Still, I couldn’t be more proud of my son who is making sure everyone understands how to use the voting system at our polling place. Be like my son and be a good citizen today. If you’ve got the right to vote, go use it!
Update: Girl Scouts are helping out, too, according to Jay Keller at the Examiner.com’s Los Angeles section.
At Fariview Elementary, a Fairfax woman reported the “best turn-out she’d ever seen.” “The line wrapped around school and down the sidewalk,” said Denise Talmadge-Davis. “Girl Scouts passed out treats and coffee, the line moved quickly, very organized.” Many early-morning voters in Virginia arrived before the rain much to their content.

Wow. Yes, quite a difference. I’m glad the country knows they can depend on the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of the USA to support citizenship. Even if sometimes they get blockaded.
