Boy Scouts Find Hiker Hell

Posted by admin under: community service .

One of the blogs I read on a daily basis is Hiker Hell. B-Real has stories from around the world discussing the dangers that people experience in day hikes, mountain climbing, and simply wandering away from camp. He recently experienced the kindness of Boy Scouts after he thought he’d been subjected to the bad humor of his friends.

I left my two friends under a tree and hiked about 50 yards away to find some privacy. When I returned, my friends were gone and so were their packs. My first reaction was they were playing a silly little prank and pretended to ditch me.

So I did the next best thing and turned the tables by grabbing my stuff and started hiking the four miles back to camp. I figured if they wanted to be funny, I could be even more funny and leaving them in my dust.

Two hundred yards up the trail was the last water source until camp. Some boy scouts were there and they were nice enough to filter three liters of water for me. I asked them if they saw my friends and they hadn’t. I told them that my friends were playing a joke on me and I was going to hoof it to camp and have them worry about me. I also told them to tell my friends that they saw me an hour ago on the trail, heading back to camp.

His friends didn’t really try to ditch him; it was just a mix-up. It’s nice to hear that Boy Scouts are willing to help a stranger out on the trail, especially when he’s got a world-wide audience to hear about the results. Way to keep that reputation shiny, boys!
