GSUSA: Nice, Clean Sand

Posted by admin under: community service .

On Saturday many of the girls in my troop went to Leo Carillo Beach in Malibu to participate in the statewide beach cleanup. One of the priorities for Girl Scouts is community service and I was very proud of my girls for participating. Fortunately, we didn’t find too much. Dozens of cigarette butts which the organizers said were part of a sum total of over 5 million collected since the program began. Being teen-age girls, they couldn’t help but “ew” and giggle over having found a pair of underwear, too. Yes, they were issued gloves to prevent touching anything really icky. We even found a dead seagull that we marked off with sticks for more professional people to dispose of.

The organizers were taking all of the bags of trash and weighing them on a common scale in order to give a total pounds cleaned up at the end.  According to NBC California cleaned up 900,000 pounds of trash at this event last year. We didn’t clean up too much. Apparently, most everybody at our beach was pretty clean. We just put the polish on.

Then we headed over to a picnic area so the girls could work on the Shore to Sea interest project. We didn’t get too much of a chance to observe tidepools between the sea and the lifeguards. The tide was up (some of the girls got splashed) and the lifeguards told us our parking pass had expired because the cleanup day was over. That kind of steamed my clam since we’d spent our own time cleaning up and then they kicked us out. Oh, well. The girls still provided a valuable community service and I was reminded that Leo Carillo is a pretty clean and nice beach. Not too crowded, either.

I think it speaks volumes that you were told to leave because your parking pass had expired. That’s just a sad commentary on our society. Thankfully the Scouts still exist as an antidote.

I know, right? We bring 3 van loads of people out to clean up and then want to help the girls learn about our environment and we get kicked out. Sometimes I wonder if people are thinking things through.
