Seeds of Kindness

Posted by admin under: community service .

I was just talking about next month’s Cub Scout theme, Seeds of Kindness, with my den last night.. Today I ran across this article out of Illinois’ Lake County Journals about Cub Scouts growing, not just collecting, growing food to help feed others.

The annual Cub Scout project began in the spring and will end in November.

To date, more than 500 pounds of produce has been harvested from the plot off of Library Lane. And almost all the food has been donated to the People Lending Assistance Network Food Pantry in Round Lake, said Scott Prentice, a den leader of the Cub Scout pack.

Jason Moens was able to list a slew of skills that he has mastered in the garden.

“We prepared the garden; we planted seeds; and we made food or the poor,” he said. “Ripping up the soil was cool.”

Parent Dave Merten of Grayslake agreed that the project was beneficial for children. It was the first time his 6-year-old son, Alex, got to garden, he said.

“We tried to teach [the scouts] that this was basically for people who needed help,” he said, “and that everybody needs fresh vegetables. Just the fact that they were learning where [food] comes from was great.”

The pack’s donations of tomatoes, beans, corn and other produce have been appreciated by the PLAN pantry, which is a ministry of Life of Faith Christian Church in Round Lake.

Wow. And I’m going to have my boys plant bean seeds to watch them grow. I declare Illinois’ Pack 451 the winner.
