Resentment in the Workplace
Posted by admin under: cookies .
I’ve seen variations on this theme from Jane at momlogic. People hate seeing the Girl Scout cookie order form at work because they feel pressured to buy.
Can someone please tell me when it became OK to panhandle at work? By panhandling, I mean selling Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, and Do-si-Dos to unsuspecting and defenseless co-workers. Isn’t there some law about soliciting in a workplace? And doesn’t hawking cookies for cash count as soliciting? I mean, I don’t come into work and sell bananas so that my son can go on a soccer trip — so why do YOU come in selling cookies?
…
So, as you can well imagine, I won’t be buying any Girl Scout Cookies this year, or any other year for that matter. And in case you’re considering asking me to sponsor you in some godforsaken marathon, you can forget that, too!
My impression is that people like Jane actually feel guilty or stressed when asked if they’d like some cookies. I’ve never pressured anyone. I feel like I’m doing a community service. Do you know how many times I’ve been asked, “Why didn’t you tell me your daughter is selling cookies? I’ve been waiting all year?” It’s the Scouting equivalent of Christmas. Goodwill toward all and let peace exist while we munch on some cookies. Yes, I get the “Oh, no. Well, okay, I’ll take a box”, but I always tell people they don’t have to buy. It seems like some kind of pro forma objection to appease their own guilty minds. I actually have a lady a few cubes down from me who is cut off because she’s been trying to lose weight and I won’t let her buy cookies for herself.
So, my advice to Jane is basically, grow up. Put on your big girl underwear and if you don’t want cookies then just say “No, thanks”. With her diatribe, though, I’m curious if she contributes in any way to any charity at all. If not, then it’s her guilty conscience talking. If she does, then she should feel stress free about passing on the cookies. Either way, it’s not my problem, it’s hers.
