Cubs: Dad and Me Time
Posted by admin under: den meetings .
Last night’s Cub Scout meeting was fairly good, I thought. We started out with the pledge and the promise and the guys are starting to learn it a little better. Then, we talked about the Law of the Pack which we had discussed at last week’s meeting. Mrs. Admin made little cardboard shields and we divided it into 4 sections like heraldry. I wrote one line of the Law in each section. I gave the shields to the boys and told them to draw whatever it was they thought of for each line of the Law. I wanted the words and the pictures next to each other so they could reinforce each other.
The boys had fun with that, but later when I asked them to recite the law a couple simply read them off the shields. Silly me. I thought they’d have more trouble reading at this young age. So, we had to turn them over so they wouldn’t have an unfair advantage. They got through the Law pretty easily. More easily than I’ve seen other Cubs do it before. Success!
We have a picnic with the Boy Scouts on Sunday so next we needed to practice our picnic game skills. Well, we only concentrated on one, but that was fine. I didn’t realize it until my wife pointed it out, but each Tiger’s partner this year is a dad. When the tykes are this small I noticed a lot of dads pawn the Scout duties off on their wives, but we’ve avoided that so far. Well, I have one single mom and Tiger pair, but they’ve dropped off the face of the earth so I’m not counting them in.
For our picnic skill we worked on the egg toss. Each Tiger pair got a bean bag (do you think I’m crazy?) and practiced tossing it back and forth. One was incredible. Sign that guy up with the Dodgers before he realizes how good he is. The other guys, including my son needed the practice and I’m a little fearful for my outfit on Sunday.
The guys didn’t want to stop playing catch with their dads, but I had a plan of wanting to reinforce the month’s theme Adventure in Books, especially because it will work into our advancement at the pack meeting in a couple of weeks. Apparently Mad Libs is some sort of copyrighted thing now so I wasn’t able to find that online, but I found a similar imitation although it didn’t work as well as the old favorite. So, we separate into our pairs and worked on our Wacky Tales and I consequently was teaching my first grader what a verb, adjective, noun, and adverb were. Then we came back together and read our stories. I love this age. You can say “The squishy zebra was 1000 miles tall” and they fall all over themselves with laughter.
We took sign-ups for the November outing to the beach and then I clued them in on what we were doing next week: rehearsing for the pack meeting and decorating the things we’re going to use there. My son is really enjoying this Tiger Cub year. That’s the whole reason I’m his Den Leader. I want to make sure he has fun.
