Boys’ Life Backpack Video
Posted by admin under: Equipment .
A few weeks ago I referenced DualScoutMom and her discussion of fitting a backpack for the user. Boys’ Life is also talking about this topic with a videoon their site showing exactly how you fit a backpack with Jon Almquist from REI.
I’ll give him a pass on referring to the space in the backpack as “65 liters”, but demand that he now refer to the bathroom as a “water closet”. For Americans this translates to a backpack of around 4,000 cubic inches. He recommends that Scouts definitely get a backpack that adjusts as they grow.
“Measure between your outer hip bone… and the bumpiest vertebrae you’ve got right here at the bottom of your neck” which he says will probably be between 14 and 19 inches. That’s your size for your backpack and you can adjust it, if it’s adjustable, to that length.
He recommends that when you’re strapping your hip belt that the hip bone on the side that you were using for measuring should be in the middle of that belt width. He’s got a little back-and-forth about how to tighten the shoulder straps.
So, go on over and check out the video from the nice Eagle Scout who works for REI.
