Firepistons. Who knew?

Posted by admin under: Equipment .

I was browsing on the internet. I write a blog, I’m not a newspaperman so I’m looking for interesting things to share. Somehow I ended back at http://www.boyscouttrail.com/. I was intrigued by this ad he has in the upper left corner of his site. So, I followed his link to http://www.firepistons.com/ (not to be confused with the very similar and just as neat http://www.firepiston.com/). Cool device. No flints or steels, but you get a good burning coal for making a fire simply by putting a stick with tinder into a plunger and taking it out again. Now I had to google it and found http://www.onagocag.com/piston.html which gives a whole comprehensive history of the firepiston and how it’s been all over the world. I was feeling stupid for never having heard of this thing before, but I felt better after learning that it never became popularized because matches were invented.

Matches are really cheap and these firepistons are not. They seem like a nifty way to make fire, but the BlastMatch from Ultimate Survival seems easier, although you aren’t guaranteed an instant burning coal.  The BlastMatch is only $20 at a sports supply store instead of $50 to $100 for the firepiston online.

The firepiston just seems so cool, though. I’m thinking of trying to figure out how to make one. Yeah, sure. As soon as I learn how to change the oil in my car. All right. Maybe I’m not that bad, but handicrafts have never been my strong suit. Why do you think I’ve got a blog?
