Girl Scout Sends Silly String
Posted by admin under: Equipment; projects .
Here’s something I hadn’t heard about even though Time magazine had published an online article on it a year and a half ago. In Iraq, soldiers have encountered booby traps that are triggered by thin wires attached to explosive devices. The soldiers have learned that Silly String, a thin foam that inflates and semi-hardens with contact to air and is sold as a party favor, is light enough not to engage the trip wires, but bright enough in their fun, fluorescent colors so that soldiers can observe it hanging from the wires. Soldiers have actually begun using them as a safety device that saves lives.
The Courier News online published a story on July 1st detailing one Girl Scout’s effort to purchase and send 500 cans of Silly String to our soldiers in Iraq. The story doesn’t say what kind of project this was for, but given that Stephanie Wood is 18, I would assume it was for a Gold Award project. Wow. How many Girl Scout projects are done to save the lives of military personnel? Way to go, Stephanie, and thanks for giving me a new perspective on the inventiveness of our soldiers.
