Less Backpack, More Backpacking
Posted by admin under: Equipment .
I like the new review of the GoLite Peak Backpack over at GearJunkie.com by Ryan Dionne. Probably because I’ve been unable to convince myself to stop inputting an excess of calories, I am interested in the whole light backpacking method. I’d love to be able to show up with a pack that weighs 8 or 9 pounds before food and still be quite comfortable on a spring trip. For those who are as inept at sewing as I am there is apparently a backpack catered to that desire. Of course, you have to pay for the privilege.
With a handful of zippered pockets, water bottle and trekking pole pockets, ice axe loops and a hydration bladder sleeve, the pack is like many others on the market. But its minimalist attitude sets it apart. The Peak includes GoLite’s Convertabelt detachable hip belt that helps cut weight by using only the waist strap for minimalist support and stability. Even the back pad is removable. The Peak, which comes in blue/gray, black/gray and green/gray, will be available in February 2010 for $125. http://www.golite.com
