Make Your Own Backpacking Stuff
Posted by admin under: Equipment .
Here a link to a fun page that has collected a few dozen ideas for making your own backpacking equipment: backpacks, tents, stoves, and sleeping gear are all there as well as other stuff. I didn’t look for a lot of other stuff to post because I got lost thinking of all the things I wanted to try. Fortunately, I cannot sew to save my life making most of the projects instant rejections, but I may try to learn again for the 10th time so I can give them a shot and use up a lot of personal time and money.
Tyvek is often referred to as a material for making tarps and tents. It’s basically like plastic sheets, but is lighter and more durable. According to this site, you can buy it at home improvement stores, but Ebay is cheaper because you can buy just the amount you want. According to this thread discussion, the type of Tyvek you get is important because some resists water more than others. It also discusses another do-it-yourself fabric people use, silnylon which is good, but expensive.
You can make some things cheaper and more customized yourself. If possible, be thrifty.
