Sea Scouts Get Free Ship
Posted by admin under: Equipment .
Gerald Carroll in the Visalia Times-Delta talks about how a new Sea Scouts Ship actually received a ship, for free. It’s an expensive kind of free, though, as anyone who has ever owned a boat knows.
As of Saturday, however, there’s nothing pretend about the Visalia Sea Scouts, an offshoot of the Boy Scouts. The group’s newly acquired 70-foot former shrimp trawler, the SS St. Joseph, is scheduled to leave Morro Bay Harbor following months of renovation.
…
Ironically, it was a $25,000 backlog in docking fees that enabled Gill and the Sea Scouts to acquire the St. Joseph — for free. Harbor officials agreed to cancel the debt if the former owners would donate the ship to the Sea Scouts, Gill said.
But huge — and expensive — challenges lie ahead before the St. Joseph can take to the open sea. Getting the vessel to dry dock in Ventura, 200 miles to the south, will cost about $50,000, Gill said.
…
Another $500,000 will be required to rebuild the ship’s interior — creating living quarters for up to 20 crewmembers — and refitting the ship’s infrastructure so it can take part in a 17-ship international Sea Scouts convoy to Alaska in 2010.
A convoy? Cool! Breaker, breaker, Rubber Duckie, this is the Sea Squid. Hm. I can’t find any other information on that event. I’ll have to find a ship in my area and ask them.
Update: Dan from Scoutingnews.org shows his superior internet scouting abilities to locate what is probably the trip that is refered to in the article: http://www.ssschaser.com/alaska2010.htm. Thanks, Dan!
