SteriPEN and Filtering

Posted by admin under: Equipment .

I’ve never seen the problem with water filtering. It didn’t seem that hard the one time I did it so the whole issue of pumping forever wasn’t really a big deal. However, for weight, convenience, and taste the SteriPEN seems pretty neat. It looks like an electric thermometer, but it emits UV light that kills bacteria and viruses. You can only sterilize a little bit of water at a time, but it’s not hard and doesn’t take that long. Here’s a funny video that somewhat discusses that and also educates as to why there’s all that bad stuff in the water. Really, it’s just a way for me to experiment with adding video to my blog.

Here’s another video that shows a guy filtering water. He’s got a Nalgene bottle almost filled in about 90 seconds. I guess the difficulty comes in when your filter doesn’t work and you don’t know why. Still the only way to prevent little bits of stuff from being in your water. Even if it’s sterilized.

Of course, you can always boil your water to kill everything or use some water purifier like iodine. I’ve never tried the iodine, but I hear it makes the water taste bad.
