Trail of Chia Seeds Leads to Europe

Posted by admin under: Equipment .

I blogged a while ago about how Chia seeds are a supposedly nutritious and filling trail snack for hikers. Although they originate from the American continent it sounds like Europeans are getting the go-ahead to exploit this new snack food.

The European Food Safety Authority has given the green light to the health food chia, allowing the oil seed to be used commercially in Europe for the first time.

Chia originates in Mexico, and its seeds have high anti-oxidant properties, and high levels of protein, vitamins and minerals.

The deal will initially let chia be used in European breads, which spells good news for the Ord Valley region of Western Australia, the largest producer of chia in the world.

The chia company’s managing director, John Foss, says the break into Europe is a big boost for the industry.

“It’s a massive market, Europe, and particularly a big bread-eating culture and a more health-conscious market than possibly what we’ve been marketing to in the past,” he says.

“Initial response to chia (in Europe) has been very favourable, so I think we’re going to do some big business in Europe in the coming year.”

As I was looking up this information I found out something else neat about Chia seeds and the great American icon of pets. LOL. For real. Click on the image if you don’t believe me.
