Woodburning Stove Report

Posted by admin under: Equipment .

CampingBlogger has a great round-up of wood burning stoves available instead of the Esbit stoves I just blogged about. As a Scouter I’m ambivalent about these kinds of stoves because you’re not supposed to collect wood from your environment when you go backpacking. At least one of the websites tries to make the argument that using fossil fuels just exports the problem of interference with the natural environment. So, you decide.

A wood burning camp stove offers some obvious advantages for backpackers, since they no longer have to pack fuel. All of these stoves can use just about any combustible material, from pinecones, to sticks, twigs, and branches.

Littlebug stove
Trailstove
Sierra stove
Woodgas Campstove XL
Wildwood backpack stove

The best part about all of these stoves is that they work! Some, like the Sierra and the Woodgas, use a battery-powered fan to help the fire burn hotter, but numerous reviews indicate that even the non-powered stoves will boil a quart of water in 5 or 6 minutes.

If you click over to CampingBlogger he has links to the websites for all those manufacturers. I checked them out and they’re mostly similar, but there is enough variation to see why they are separately viable as companies. Just some more info for the backpacking stove of your choice.

Hey – thanks for the inspiration on this one. I hadn’t thought about the old Esbit stoves in years, so when you blogged about them a few weeks ago, I took a look around at what was available on the market today.
