Online Fundraising

Posted by admin under: fundraising .

This is interesting. A Life rank Boy Scout is trying to raise money for this Eagle Project with a website called fundable. Apparently, anyone can go to the site and set up a fundraising page, others can pledge to pay for that project or idea, and if enough pledges are earned then the money is collected. If not enough pledges are earned, then no one pays.

BSA rules allow for online fundraising and selling, but the Girl Scouts are a little more ambiguous. I know Girl Scouts are not allowed to sell cookies on the internet, but I’m not sure about other types of fundraisers. The existing policy seems to indicate no.

I guess I don’t really have a problem with online fundraising, but my personal opinion is that an Eagle Project is supposed to impact your local community and it would seem appropriate for the contributors to be local, too. That pretty much requires direct contact by the Boy Scout although the website could be a way for them to contribute after contact has been made.

I know Girl Scouts are worried that people will sell online and say they are Girl Scouts, but may not actually be Girl Scouts. It would seem the same problem would exist for Boy Scouts. Since any type of fundraising needs prior approval from the local council I guess they’ll have to be the ones policing the net to make sure contributions made to Scouting are really going there.
