Popcorn, Cookies, and Soccer Uniforms

Posted by admin under: fundraising .

The Manhasset Press online published a request from Connie Wysota to collect used soccer uniforms and equipment July 5th through 7th in Manhasset, New York. The request came as a result of conversations with service personnel in Iraq who expressed gratitude for the popcorn and Girl Scout cookies that had been previously sent and shared with Iraqi children. The soldiers asked if soccer equipment could be sent, too, due to the popularity of the sport in Iraq and the goodwill engendered by the charity given to Iraqi children. It’s another example of our soldiers and the Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts of the USA coming together to grow the friendship between the United States of America and the reborn nation of Iraq.

Update: I e-mailed Ms. Wysota to ask how her efforts went for this and her previous collection efforts. This was her reply.

We collected enough uniforms to field at least four teams.  We could still use some shin guards. : ) I cannot even tell you how many cases of boy scout popcorn we have shipped.  The soldiers love the microwave popcorn.  As for Girl Scout cookies, it started out as a troop effort.  We then got our association involved. About three years ago, we got the entire Girl Scouts of Nassau County council involved.  We have shipped tens of thousands of boxes of cookies to soldiers. It has been extremely rewarding and the soldiers truly appreciate it.

Thanks for your support of scouts!
Regards,
Connie Wysota
