Different Take on Journeys Transformation

Posted by admin under: Girl Scout Reorganization .

I’ve talked before about how the Girl Scouts of the USA has been changing its focus from basically just having the girls earn badges and participate in traditional Girl Scout outdoor activities like camping into focusing more about training girls to be leaders. My understanding was that the national organization had commissioned a study that indicated this was something girls wanted, although I had a different understanding of those study results. I’m not a trained researcher, though. A comment in a recent story by Sue White for The Saginaw News seems to indicate the study was a justification for a planned change in direction.

“We were trying to be everything to everybody,” said Jason Schoenmeyer, who worked for 10 years at the Mitten Bay Council’s Kochville Township office before becoming council program and property executive with Heart of Michigan.

“But when it comes to something like sports, there are others who already do it well.

“We started looking at what we do best, and it was building leadership.”

That’s why girls today will embark on “journeys,” learning how to discover, connect and take action on issues in their community.

“All the pieces come together and drive the program,” Schoenmeyer said. “They learn how to change their world, from the youngest not realizing what we’re achieving through our activities to the oldest, the Ambassadors, actually becoming advocates for causes they support with a passion.”
