And Now a Random History Lesson on the GSUSA

Posted by admin under: history .

Kimberly Torres has published her own account of the history and significant figures of the Girl Scouts of the USAat a website, Associated Content, that seems like a sort of open blog/wikipedia wanna-be type place. Whatever the reason I’m happy to say thanks whenever someone stands up on a soapbox and says more people should join Girl Scouts.

The Girl Scout organization is a volunteer organization. Without the adult leaders making a commitment to teaching and empowering young girls, this organization would not be what it is today. As a leader myself, I find the wonderful thing about this organization is the wealth of knowledge and support a new leader has at her fingertips. As a leader, I have experienced a growth in the girls within the troop. I also have the opportunity to spend quality time with my daughter and setting a good example for her in the lessons and activities we as a troop enjoy together. Teaching her to be a strong individual as well as part of a sisterhood and working well with others, being considerate of other views and opinions and showing respect for herself and others has been the most beneficial aspect of being a leader.

It’s easy to lose track of the time you could be spending with your daughter until you wake up one day and she’s stopped asking you to play with her, talk to her, or coming to you for advice. It’s also easy to become one of the parents in the grandstands who watches other people coaching her and leading her. Girl Scouts still depends on parents to be involved in order to create opportunities for the girls to experience and learn from our natural environment as well as the modern world. Besides, would you rather be cleaning out the hall closet or sharing a new discovery with your daughter in the fresh air? My greatest benefit is knowing my daughter wants me there by her side.
