Historical Troop Numbering
Posted by admin under: history .
Here’s something I’ve never heard about and I know at least one gentleman who has been in Scouting since the 30’s. According to Julie Brown at hometownlife.com, there is a Boy Scout troop in Plymouth Township, Michigan, that has the troop number P6. She says that’s how troops used to numbered way back when.
Collins, from Troop P6, is a member of one of the original Boy Scout troops and the only one still in existence when troops were numbered P2, P3 and such. His troop is more than 50 years old and its charter organization is the Plymouth Lions Club.
Googling around I found a page in the United Kingdom by Jim Lyttle that backs this up with some neat, old pictures of troops P1 through P7 out of Portadown, Ireland. I can’t find any more references to this so imagine how rare an old Boy Scout uniform with the “P” troop designation would be. It makes the collector in me drool, but since I don’t really collect much except currency I’ll live without it. Thanks for the history lesson, Julie!
