Behind the Curtain, Just for Fun
Posted by admin under: International .
One of the things I like to do is obsess a little about how many people are looking at this blog and where they’re from so I signed up for google analytics information. Apparently, google can get some generalized information about you when you visit, like what state or country you’re in.
Canada I expected. The UK I expected, too, but it’s still cool because it’s the origin of Scouting and on another continent. Other countries: Mexico, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Hungary, France, Spain, Denmark, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Philippines, Indonesia, and Australia. Hey, will somebody tell those guys in Iraq I keep writing about them?
I can even drill down into the United States. Most of my visits come from California which isn’t surprising because that’s most of the people I know and told about my blog. I’ve almost gotten all of the states except Montana, North Dakota, Vermont, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Alabama.
This is neat!
Update: But I’m going to have to learn my domestic geography again since that’s clearly Mississippi, not Alabama I’m waiting on. Doh!

You may not see any internet traffic from Iraq. Iraq is not very wired so the majority of their internet traffic comes from satellite connections. I know their services used to be provided mainly by a company in Georgia (the state), and Satellite Media Services of England. Not sure if that is the case anymore.
When I was in Afghanistan I know my connection was routed through Hong Kong via satellite.

Wow. I didn’t know that. I used to read “Iraq the Model” all the time, some Iraqi bloggers, so I had assumed that internet was available. I didn’t think about the satellite thing. Thanks for the info, Dan!

[...] from Russia, I looked at my google analytics world map and I’ve had no visitors from there. I posted about these cool stats a couple months ago and I’m happy to say I’ve finally gotten a hit from every state in the union. Delaware [...]
