British Invade the Heartland of America
Posted by admin under: International .
British Boy Scouts (and a Girl Guide) visited Camp Geiger in Missouri in an exchange program started in 1985. The story talks about the differences between American Scouting and British Scouting including the previously unknown to me fact that British Scouts aren’t allowed to carry knives. I guess there’s a whole big deal with knives, incuding pocket knives, in the U.K. You’d think this wouldn’t apply to Boy Scouts, but I couldn’t find anything direct, just how the society in general thinks knives are inherently dangerous and nobody really needs to carry one. So, it’s no surprise that the British Scouts took notice of American Scouts walking around with knives in their pockets (and probably a few sheath knives, too). In my troop we chide the boys who have earned the right to carry a knife if they don’t have one. A Scout should be prepared.
Sounds fun hosting a foreign troop. We’re in Los Angeles and that’s fairly cosmopolitan. We should see if we could host a foreign troop.
