The Boy Scouts of Iraq
Posted by admin under: International .
Of course, we all know that Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts is an international movement. I was wondering what happened to the attempt to restart the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides in Iraq back in 2004. Apparently, it’s still going strong. There’s a nice history of the restart and the previous history of Scouting in Iraq on Wikipedia. I know. Many people think Wikipedia is unreliable, but my opinion is there’s a lot of good stuff on there and if you stay away from the political subjects it tends to be quite accurate.
For the uninitiated (that’s me just a few years ago), just about everywhere in the world Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are combined in one organization. Here in the USA they are actually separate entities. One of the weird things at the World Jamboree last year was knowing that boys and girls were camping together at that event. More on that at another time.
So, restarting Scouting in Iraq has restarted both Boy Scouts and Girl Guides (they call them guides instead of Scouts) in Iraq. You can follow the progress of Scouting in Iraq at http://greenzonecouncil.blogspot.com/. I like the camping article and the news that Trails End Popcorn, which does fundraising with Boy Scouts, donated $25,000 worth of popcorn to the Iraqi scouting program. They even had a pinewood derby in May! I love the news that Scouting is helping to develop character and leadership in Iraq as well as our own country and that the United States of America was instrumental in getting their program back on its feet.
