Troop 70’s Irish Adventure
Posted by admin under: International .
I have to post this story of a Boy Scout troop attending the Irish International Jamboree. When my son came back from England and the centennial Jamboree he immediately started trying to figure out a way to get to the Irish Jamboree this year. Didn’t happen, but maybe he’ll be happy another troop got there. Naw, he’ll just eat his heart out.
Eight boys from University Park BSA Troop 70 were among the approximately 12,500 Scouts who gathered in Punchestown, Ireland, last month for the 2008 Irish International Jamboree. The event, which celebrated 100 years of Irish Scouting, drew 10,000 Irish youth and 2,500 others from around the world. The event was said to be the largest gathering in the history of the Irish Scouting movement.

“Being from Texas is a magnet for everyone. We stick out in a crowd – taller than most folks here. We wear weird hats (cowboy), have different uniforms (tan in a sea of dark blue Irish shirts. Our neckers (neckerchiefs) are a hit. Everyone wanted to trade,” explained scoutmaster Bob Pospick, in an e-mail sent from the road.

“International Day” at the Jamboree saw the local youth preparing a special Texas chili dinner to share with others, while a highlight of the trip was a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Ireland Tom C. Foley who attended the Jamboree expressly to visit with the U.S. Scouts.
Wow. Why doesn’t the Ambassador ever come looking for me? No cowboy hat. That’s got to be it. Congratulations to Troop 70 on their Irish Adventure!
What a great report from a mom, Judy Blaising.
