Goshen! Boy Scouts Abandon New Jamboree Site
Posted by admin under: jamboree .
The new national Boy Scout Jamboree site in Goshen, Virginia is not going to be used according to the National Capitol Area Boy Scout Council. There were too many restrictions being put on the BSA due to the local citizen opposition I reported earlier here and here. ScoutingNews.org has a copy of the press release here which reads in part
The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has determined that its proposed site in Rockbridge County, Virginia, for the National Scouting Center, which includes the 2013 National Scout Jamboree, is being withdrawn from consideration due to the significant restrictions on land utilization. For the past few months, the BSA has been studying the challenges around land use and what would be needed to prepare the site to host a number of activities, including a national summer camp, quadrennial jamboree, and other programs. The site is currently owned by the National Capital Area Council of the Boy Scouts.
According to that press release the most likely next spot is the West Virginia property that was going to be developed for a high adventure base. I guess the two purposes are being combined.
Wow. I really didn’t think the site was going to be pulled. Hey, maybe the BSA would like to reconsider some western properties. It would save me some money in 2017 when my next son is ready to go to Jamboree. We’ve got lots of cool stuff to see out here, too… No, not the national capitol and all that, but we still know how to party.
Thanks to New York O/A Trader and The Scout Patch Auction for the tip on the story, and of course Dan at ScoutingNews.org for ferreting out more info.

Wish they would move it to (decomissioned) Fort Ord near Monterey. Close enough to major airports, there kayaking (estuary and sea), hiking, and cool weather in the summer.

I thing Goshen would of been a great place for the Jamboree. I have work as a staff member at Goshen Scout Reservation for the past 5 summer and it would of been a great Jamboree spot. It sad to here that its not getting to improvment that the Jamboree would of brought. But hey i don’t have to worry about it changing.
