BSA: Different Kind of Smoky Scout

Posted by admin under: meetings .

You know about our North Carolina cousinfrom the blogroll, but I’m talking about a different kind of Smoky Scout this time. Me! The areas all around us have been on fire since the weekend and it affected last night’s Boy Scout meeting. The boys were doing a lashing workshop and were going to lash up some frames and have races, but the Scoutmaster decided that the air quality was too poor to risk having the guys do that kind of exercise so they had to stay inside the meeting hall where they did improv skits for each other instead.

In fact, our next outing was canceled because the property we were going to do it on was in the midst of one of the fires. Since that property is surrounded by homes I’m sure it wasn’t burned, but we knew that too many families were going to be worried about sending their boys for a high-energy outing right next to the smoldering embers of a recent fire and that the air quality was going to be poor (or at least people would think so). I think the organizers breathed a sigh of relief because they hadn’t really done all that they needed to get ready.

We’re starting up the year and we’ve been looking at putting in a new order for troop and pack t-shirts. $40 set-up fee and $9 per shirt sounds pretty reasonable to me. That and giving a Life Scout a hard time for showing up for his Eagle application signature in flip-flops kept me busy (fortunately his dad drove over with a proper pair of shoes. Who wears a full uniform and flip-flops?).

Our Scoutmaster was touch-and-go as far as coming to the meeting because his house was close to the fires, also. My wife’s friend and co-leader for the service unit is still waiting to get back into her home after being evacuated on Monday. When I saw the fires I knew there were scores of Scout families who were evacuated. It will be a month full of rich stories after all this is done.
