New Boy Scout Merit Badges
Posted by admin under: merit badge .
I like the round-up of the recent merit badges introduced by the Boy Scouts of America that can be found at ScoutingNews.org. Four are covered, but the one I really like is Scuba. I wonder how this got through the overly protective boards that seem to have gained force of the last few decades. However, being that the training for SCUBA emphasizes buddy system and mutliple levels of checking on gear it might be more akin to rapelling which is a great part of the Scouting program.
So far we’ve heard about the following merit badges:
– Robotics merit badge approved. Requirements under development. Debut expected spring 2010.
– GPS/GIS merit badge approved. Requirements under development. Debut expected early 2010.
– Scouting Heritage merit badge has been approved. Requirements under development. Debut expected later this year
– Scuba merit badge has been approved. Requirements under development. Debut expected late this year.

GPS? Interesting. And BSA approves Scubing – a MB only a fraction of scouts will be able to earn. But they don’t have one for Caving/ Spelunking (other than for explorers) – one I think most scouts would be able to earn. JMO.

A Scuba Mertit Badge is easy and I would guess we’ve taken at least 30-40 kids to a scuba intro and over the last 2 years have at least 20 kids fully certified for Open Water and some more for Advanced. It makes Sea Base 100% more fun, and you don’t have to live near the ocean. We’re in Ohio, and go at least twice a year. We just attempted a world record dive…..Caving and Spelunking’s cool too, but I for one am Excited for the new Merit Badge….

Has anyone heard what happened to the application fopr a (new and timely) PATRIOTISM merit badge that was submitted on July 21, 2008? It is unlike any other merit badge. It requires the BSA Executive Board to select a Blue Ribbon panel, comprosed of present day distinguished Americans, that will prepare a Reading List of American Patriots. Candidates for the PATRIOTISM merit badge will be required to read at least four books on the Reading LIst and,as a final requirement, to conduct research and prepare an essay on an American Patriot of his choice. The usual examination and award ceremont will follow. The suggested logo for the sash will be a replica of rthe American flag.
