Boy Scouts Talk to Orbiting Spacecraft
Posted by admin under: Outings .
Melissa Mecija at ksby.com shares an excellent story about Boy Scouts talking to an astronaut on the International Space Station. Apparently, astronaut Gregory Chamitoff and Troop 105’s Assistant Scoutmaster John Schlesselmann went to college together at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. The Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club set up the event and hooked up the Scouts to the ISS via ham radio. Is that cool, or what? They even have pictures and videos of the event at http://www.n6kth.com/iss/.
It is a chance not many people get, speaking with someone hundreds of miles in outer space. Those lucky boy scouts spent some one-on-one time with the local astronaut.
Anxious kids plus amateur radio equipment equals what you would say is a long distance call.
“Hey guys,” Chamitoff greeted the audience at UC Santa Barbara. “It’s great for you to be joining us on the space station today. Welcome aboard.”
Now that’s a memory you can cherish for a lifetime.
