GSUSA: It Must Be Bowling Season

Posted by admin under: Outings .

The day after my Boy Scout troop and my Cub Scout pack joined together for a bowling outing my Girl Scout troop had their own. Yes, they all independently came up with the idea and then happened to schedule them in the same weekend. So, I bowled.

At last night’s outing with the girls I expected to see a big difference. How would the girls throw scores aside and do some sort of collaborative thing that would reinforce my view that boys and girls are different. Well, they didn’t. There was more screaming. There was minor drama over wardrobe selections. In all the other ways that matter, though, they were the same. They care about doing their best and had fun competing against each other.

One of the girls was on the lane with me and some others that didn’t have bumpers up. Sheesh. I tried to get the other girls to lower their bumpers, but they stuck to them like glue. One of the girls on my lane kept throwing gutter balls and seemed a little put out, but she was still upbeat. I talked her through some ways to improve and it worked. She did better. I also leaned in like it was a secret to tell her that all of her points were earned and the other girls couldn’t know what their real score would have been if they didn’t have bumpers. Then I announced to the other group that we were adding 30 points to our score because of the bumpers and then grinned as they denounced my scam.

We did have a good time and once again the biggest lesson I think the kids learned was the courtesy that is part of bowling in allowing the lane next to you to have a clear field of vision without distraction. Taking turns and making the kids look around to be aware of how they are affecting others is a side-benefit of bowling. Mostly, though, it’s just fun to knock the pins down.
