Military Academy Hosts Scouts
Posted by admin under: Outings .
This is a story from SouthCoastToday.com which describes a congregation of Scouts at West Point in New York. I know a certain explorer troop from Imperial who would probably really like that, if another story is true.
Venture Crew 20 of Middleboro, sponsored by Sacred Heart Church, recently participated in the 47th annual Scoutmaster’s Council Camporee at West Point Military Academy.
Attendance is by invitation only and Crew 20 was fortunate enough to be chosen in a lottery for this year’s event. Scouts from Crew 20 along with some older Scouts from Troop 20, and their leaders, made the trip to New York for a weekend of military style competitions, demonstrations and fun.
Venture Crews, Girl Scout troops and Boy Scout troops alike participated in such things as land navigation, camouflage, first aid and hand grenade toss competitions. For the second year in a row, the Crew was awarded first place in the Commander’s Challenge, a team race involving crawling, carrying, running and push-ups. They also took home second and third place in two other races.
The weekend concluded with a huge bonfire (the local fire department was on hand) and an award ceremony and parade of all the Scouts in front of some of the West Point brass.
Sounds like fun! However, I’d be a little concerned at the grenade throwing event. You know, if it was really grenades.
