Surprised Cubs Meet Governor Jindal

Jennifer Kilcrease reports that while a Cub Scout Tiger den was visiting her newspaper office, The Gazette in Farmerville, Louisiana they got a much bigger den outing than they had expected.

Gov. Bobby Jindal’s visit to Union parish last Thursday turned out to be a special day for the Tiger Den, Pack 16 Cub Scouts of Farmerville.

Jindal toured Union, Webster, Claiborne and Lincoln parishes last week to survey storm damage and recovery efforts in the area. Jindal stopped Thursday at the Union Parish Courthouse to address residents and thank them for all the support offered during hurricanes Gustav and Ike.
“I’ve never been more proud of Louisiana,” Jindal said. “We will emerge from this a stronger state.”

After briefing the group on the conditions of Louisiana’s southern parishes, Jindal took time to talk to the Cub Scouts who were on a visit to The Gazette to learn what a reporter does.
“It was definitely an unexpected opportunity for these scouts to meet an official,” Cubmaster Mike Tynes said. “I hope they will remember this throughout their life.” The scouts also met with Col. Michael Edmonson, Deputy Secretary Superintendent of State Police and Maj. Gen. Bennett Landreneau with the La. National Guard. Maj. Gen. Landreneau presented each scout with an Award of Excellence.

The Tiger Cubs were planning on going to see a reporter at the Gazette, when they were directed to the Farmerville Court House, where the reporter was covering the words of Governor Bobby Jindal. The Tigers were able to listen to the Governor speak briefly before he sat and spoke with them personally for a little while. Here in the scouts are holding up the ‘Award For Excellence’ coin given by the Adjutant General. Afterwards, the Tigers went back to the Gazette to speak to the reporter about her daily tasks. This was truly a treat for the Tiger Scouts. (10-1-2008)

What a great story! Talk about your den outings!
