Andy Says Merit Badges Are Forever
Posted by admin under: policies .
When I first joined my troop as a leader I witnessed someone being told they needed to restart their merit badge and I was a tough dad and when my boy didn’t finish a merit badge within a year I told him to restart it. The rule told to me in the beginning was that the Boy Scout needed to finish his merit badge within six months of starting it. I couldn’t find any documentation for the rule, but I figured it was a troop thing. I was wrong. In the July 7th edition of “Ask Andy”, the same question came up and Andy’s response was “HORSEPUCKY!”.
Apparently, once a Boy Scout starts a merit badge he can continue to work on it for years until it’s done. I’m not sure how the Merit Badge Counselor feels comfortable that the boy knows the material if it took that long, but I guess that’s up to the individual counselor. So, I guess I’ll back off a bit and let my son finish that camping merit badge he started 3 years ago.
