Boy Scouts of America’s Annual Report
Posted by admin under: policies .
Most already know that the Boy Scouts of America is a federally chartered organization, but it is also required to submit an annual report to Congress as part of that charter. ScoutingNews.org has listed the report as it now appears on the Boy Scouts national website.
Of course the report highlighted ArrowCorps5 which was a great asset to the country and exactly the kind of publicity the Boy Scouts can use more of. I like the fact that you can go to the annual report to get a pulse on the health of the organization through the membership figures. Based on the membership reports from 2008, 2007, and 2006 membership numbers seem to be stabilizing although the BSA did lose over 20,000 youth last year. Varsity and Venturing is growing, but traditional Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts are shrinking. One interesting bit of grammar is that the counts represent “programs”, not individuals, because a boy may be simultaneously enrolled in the traditional program and the Venturing program.
According to the treasurer’s report, the Boy Scouts lost 192 million dollars last year due to the housing collapse and preparing for the centennial next year. However, they netted over a million dollars in day-to-day operation fees, but not from selling Scout stuff (that lost 2 million) or registration fees (that lost 5.5 million). Scouting magazines ad revenue decreased which lost another million for the BSA. So, I guess the BSA just laid off, closed shops, or didn’t fill open positions for that million dollars or something. I couldn’t figure out where it came from.
Go ahead and read through the report. You can see previous years’ reports, too. Much of it is PR, which we need, but there’s also a lot of useful factoids, as well.
