Disingenuous Note
Posted by admin under: policies .
The Gay and Lesbian Times somehow heard about the rally that Scouting For All was holding in San Diego this weekend against the Boy Scouts and did a story on it. Joseph Pena said all the things you’d expect him to say, but put a disingenuous note near the end of the story.
Jennifer Schumaker, a lesbian and mother of two, said her 9-year-old son asked if he could join the scouts and if Schumaker would be his den mom. The scouts do not permit children of gay or lesbian parents or atheists to join.
There is nothing stated anywhere I can find or have been trained to enforce that states that the children of homosexual or atheist parents are not allowed to join. The parents can’t register as leaders, but even then there is no policy prohibiting their ability to support their child’s pack, troop, or crew. What would be a fair inference is that children of atheist parents may not be able to promise to do their duty to God since most children learn their religious principles from their parents. However, if it was an older child who had decided that he didn’t agree with his parents and was religious there is no reason that child couldn’t join. However, the parents have to approve of their kids desire to join and it seems unlikely that they would. It’s the parents who control that process, not the BSA.
It seems silly to misconstrue policies when there’s so much they enthusiastically hate us for already.
