McCain Cites Scouting
Posted by admin under: policies .
A quote by John McCain posted on June 25th on the Time magazine website cites Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts as examples of institutions that preserve democracy. The issue came up again today because of a politico.com article that portrays McCain as a candidate with no national service plan. I don’t look to the government to tell me how to volunteer for things I consider important so I don’t see why it should matter, but Ben Adler says the volunteer mentality of Americans makes this a political position worth having.
I guess that might be true since Barack Obama has a 3.5 billion dollar plan to pay people to volunteer according to Mr. Adler (in Scouting we call those kinds of people employees or professionals, not volunteers). In response, someone has started an online group labeled “Boy Scouts for Barack Obama” on the official Obama for President website with the official BSA logo and everything. Obama apparently isn’t aware of the fact that the BSA does not endorse any political candidate. Actually, it’s probably more like the person who created the Obama entry doesn’t care about that policy and that the Obama campaign isn’t aware of the usage of the BSA official logo on the site.
In any event, it’s nice to know that both candidates acknowledge the fact that Scouting is a movement that supports our democratic republican form of government.
