Girl Scouts for John Murtha?
Posted by admin under: politics .
Did the Girl Scouts in Pennsylvania have something to do with Congressman John Murtha holding on to his congressional seat in this past election? Sean Dreher writes about and quotes Congressman Murtha.
After polling nearly even with political newcomer William Russell just 10 days before the election, Murtha was quick to thank those who helped him retain his seat in the house.
“The folks worked so hard. I appreciate President Clinton coming in, I appreciate Hillary Clinton’s robo-calls, and of course Joyce’s long-term work with the girl scouts and all of it really paid off,” he said.
How did the Girl Scouts pay off for Murtha? Was Congressman Murtha reflecting on his wife’s work being an issue of good public relations that helped to boost his image? I don’t know. I’ve written to the Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania to get clarification. Given Congressman Murtha’s previous indelicate remarks it is probably just an odd turn of phrase. I hope so.
Update: Patricia Burkart, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania was kind enough to write me back. She stated that her council does not endorse or oppose any candidate for public office. She confirmed that the Murthas are supporters of Girl Scouts and mentioned that they are lifetime members.
