CPR Training Merits Nomination
Posted by admin under: recognition .
Susan Weich at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch relates the story of a Boy Scout who offered his training advice to help save a woman who had drowned.
Back in July, Trent and his sister Skye were in kayaks, paddling ahead of their parents, when Trent saw a commotion on shore, and his Boy Scout training kicked in.
A man was calling for help, and a woman was lying on the gravel bar unconscious. Another woman was trying to resuscitate her, but her CPR technique wasn’t up-to-date, Trent said.
…
Trent talked the woman’s sister through the correct number of chest compressions and breaths to administer and at what intervals.
…
She followed Trent’s precise instructions, and a few minutes later, the injured woman was spitting up water, and then she started breathing on her own.
…
Since there was no cell phone reception in the area, Trent and Skye hurried back to their kayaks and paddled as fast as they could to the Huzzah Valley Resort three miles away.
…
Trent got back to the resort before his sister, and he alerted a staff member, who got onto an all-terrain vehicle and backtracked up the river to the injured woman.
…
Before they left, the woman’s fiancé offered Trent $40 for his help, but he wouldn’t accept it.
“I just told him he could repay the favor to somebody else sometime,” he said.
…
Scoutmaster Tom Szepanski decided that Trent should be honored for his actions and last week nominated him for the Boy Scout’s Lifesaving Award. The honor recognizes acts that demonstrate unusual heroism, skill or bravery and reflect Scouting ideals.
Good memory for Trent. I take CPR training every year and I can never seem to keep those numbers straight. I hope Trent gets his award because he certainly deserves it.
