Cubs: Pack Meeting Packed a Lot
Posted by admin under: recognition .
Wednesday was the third Pack meeting my son attended, but it was our first really official one because last month was rushed and the one before that was a brief introduction. So, we finally did our formal induction. I had pine scented oil wafting in the church. Nature music loaded up to play. Each family pledged to support their son and each son pledged to support his pack. The boys were presented with scrapbooks to start writing their Scouting story. But first, we had to make an entrance!
We had practiced bursting through some paper at our den meeting and the actual event came off without a hitch. The boys had decorated their paper banner as the book cover to Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book”. I was a little afraid the boys would become attached to it and not want to rip it to shreds as they charged into the meeting, but they didn’t give it a second thought. I’ve really been looking forward to this. In Boy Scouts the adults don’t get to have nearly the same amount of participation and fun with ceremonies as they do with Cub Scouts. I really enjoyed myself when my older son made his way through the Cub Scout levels. I’m going to enjoy it even more with my youngest.
Because the boys had learned their Cub Scout basics: sign, salute, and handshake, they were presented with their Tiger totems to keep track of their progress towards their Tiger badge. They went even farther and all of them understood and could recite from memory what Webelos stands for, the Cub Scout promise, motto, and Law of the Pack. With their entire Bobcat trail accomplished I was able to present each of them with their Bobcat badge. They got the traditional upside down presentation which is thankfully much easier when they are this age. I’ve had some new Webelos Scouts earn Bobcat and some of those guys I had to have a second set of hands for.
The boys were presented with their patch banners that have been a pack tradition for decades. Immediately they received many patches for their activities over the last few months. Finally, they received their popcorn selling prizes, including a patch. Whew! I don’t think we’ll ever have another Pack meeting as full of awards as this one was. It’s no wonder it ran long.
The boys were a little overwhelmed by the end, but they enjoyed themselves throughout the meeting. What a great October we had!
